DJ NIKKI Interview with KCAT on her new music for 2010, KCAT style & shopping

KCAT (pronounced” Cat”) is a singer from London, best known for her feature on Delinquent’s top 20 smash “My Destiny”. Kcat is now about to liven things up with her current record 'Boys Dont Cry'. I sat down with Kcat to ask about her plans for 2010, the Boys Dont Cry Video, where she likes to shop & Kcat style.
NIKKI: Hey Kcat, tell me about your current single, what's it called and is this your signature sound?
KCAT: The single is called "Boys Don't Cry". Its a set-up single that is more of an introduction, and a small taste as to what sound you will be hearing from my project. The sound of this single compliments the other tracks that has been recorded so far. I'd say the sound of "Boys Don't cry" offers a softer side in terms of my personality, but the subject matter has more attitude. The song is about differentiating and the separation of the boys from the men, a song that is not a signature sound but a starter to the main course.

NIKKI: The Video is great, do you have strong ideas about your look and visual identity as an artist?
KCAT: Yes! I do have a lot of say as to what I wear, and give some direction in visuals such as photo-shoots, and the creativity in videos and even subject matters in songs. I think that it is vital for any artist to have their own identity, especially being in a very competitive Industry. You must find ways to stand out and also be true to your personality and who you are as a person, otherwise your clothes end up wearing you when it should be you that wears the clothes.

NIKKI: What and who are your musical influences?
KCAT: I idolise so many artists for different reasons, but my favourite of all time will have to be Michael Jackson. Other Influences are people like Queen, Pat Benetar, Blondie, Gwen Stefani, Pink to name the few off the top of my head. I draw Inspiration from a lot of colourful artists.

NIKKI: Describe the Kcat style..who are your fav designers & any secret Kcat shops/ hangouts?
KCAT: I'm a bit of a mish-mash of high street/vintage/second hand and high fashion. I wear whatever, or wherever my mood takes me. I love Absolute Vintage, anything brick lane. My secret is, surprisingly I have found so many unique statement pieces from eBay and unknown designers who sell their stuff on-line. I love high street of course, and high fashion if I can afford it. Vivien Westwood is my favourite!. Id say my style is colourful, mad, edgy a cross between Audry Hepburn, Gwen Stefani, and Grace Jones.

NIKKI: Describe yourself in 5 words?
KCAT: Happy, Colourful, Creative, Unusual, Unique

NIKKI: What does 2010 hold for Kcat (new singles, sounds, album, features) ?
KCAT: 2010 is a very exciting year for me. I'd say its the year of taking a big leap of faith, and taking risks, and enjoying the many wonderful things life has to offer.
I have a few collaborations lined up with some very talented producers. I am currently working with The Mike Delinquent Project, Paul Emanuel, The Wideboys, and Polluted Mindz so watch out for that. Also I have a mini-album to be released in the summer. I have a lot to look forward to!

The Dopest Party I have DJ'd at so far this year...Dominic's Bday Party, 6th Floor Shoreditch House

Last Saturday in between LFW shennanigans I hit the roof at Shoreditch House to spin for my friend Dominic's Birthday Bash.

the Birthday boy...

No Joke- hands down the most fun party I have played at of 2010 so far! The people were fun, up for it and the other DJ's were wicked, so the music was the most diverse & best I have have heard at a party in a long long time...in fact since Fashbashsoundclash!
Big up the other DJ's: Jason Taylor & Steffie & shout to Dom :)
on the playlist: early Jungle classics, dubstep, 80s&90s MAW house & hip hop and a couple of rare grooves & Capleton.

This week my old china plate Aicha McKenzie had her LFW party for her model & dance agency AMCK. It was held at super- cute spot 'Circus' in Covent Garden, London. We had a private area which was filled with beauties & free punch which was delish!
Half way through proceedings a couple of circus performers appeared as-if-by-magic and did acrobatics from the ceiling ! Quite astounding...

The Elle Style Awards 2010- the outfits & me and my crew hanging out

The Elle Style Awards was a star studded event as always, I rocked up to it and hung out with all my girls...shouts to Natasha Chang Lewis (the don of all stylists!) Arieta, Jenny D, Chloe & Claire, Dennis, Chayla & Mason.
It was nice to experience the Awards this year as a guest instead of from behind the decks as I have been for about the past 10 yrs! Things are moving on...lol...
This year the awards were held at The Connaught Rooms and were sponsored by Next, shout to Natalie, who I have not seen for ages. Next must have put alot into the budget as the venue looked great. Celebrities in attendance were Naomi, Colin Firth, Lisa Snowdon, The Olsen Twins, Danni & Kylie Minogue, Corrinne Bailey- Ray & my favourite Eric O'Connor.

Most of the celebrities didn't even stay for the after- party to start this year though! I remember DJing for this event for yrs and they would all be on the dance floor till the early hours of the morning- this year most were whisked away before the awards even finished!
