I know right now everyone wants to be a DJ, including models, glamour chicks, Big Brother Contestants, band members & my neighbours cousins dog, but the life of a DJ is not always sunshine, free drinks and party time.
I usually just show the shiny pictures and fun nights out on my Blog, but there is always a story of too much 'Haterade' being drunk by the competition, dramas over fees and other mishaps behind every gig.
If you wanna be a DJ for real, you will encounter in this shady business called music & clubs allot of dodgy carachters who will lie cheat and steal at every opportunity.
The rise of celebrity culture has made people even more obsessive and cut throat. There are so many people who are willing to sell their Granny's soul to the devil in order to hang out with/work with/throw a party for a celebrity, who are definitely not even events organisers or anyone in their own right.
This has brought many headaches into the clubs parties & events, not least the insatiable thirst for celebrity parties & news and pictures of famous people falling out of parties.
I definitely didn't get into DJing for any of that shite- I wanted to be a DJ and loved music. I loved the culture of DJing and illegal clubs & dancing till 6am and FUN!
Even in the early days I never really bothered about famous people or the bullshit, I am more interested in people who make music & talent. I don't like the hangers on much and even the artists- I don't treat them any differently to anyone else. I like meeting new people, but I cant face the constant arse kissing that goes along with it.
I know for a fact if I could play the game more I would get more work, but I just cant do it. I cant brown nose or suck up to anyone just because or smile when I'm being told 'don't play too much Black Music' - that's not how I was brought up- to judge people on their 'fame' materialism or whatever else people worship these days or to compromise my own views, morals or integrity.
I often see the irony of being booked as a DJ because I have DJ'd for so many high profile events, but often the promoter is only interested in the names and who you know...I just wanna know real peeps that I like- and make music with artists who I respect.
The other thing is that many events people will use me when they launch an event or club night to bring my style and music etc. Build it up get press etc then trade you in for a £50 DJ who has basically copied your whole set from the past weeks & then get rid of you. This has happened to me soooo many times its actually laughable lol- YEAH YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!
These are the lyrics that they tend to buss 'Can you Blog this and promote it on your Facebook Twitter etc for us ...as well as bring some celebrities...oh and maybe we can have your first born and a kidney too?'
and 'we are getting you so much press for this- we have really pushed it for you' which translates into- 'we have used all your pictures from your website with musicians for our press, we are pushing it for ourselves and we will dash you for a cheaper DJ as soon as we get busy'
:)
I'm telling you- there is so much Party & Bullshit in this industry that don't even start out unless you have a thick skin to begin with... people are constantly emailing me asking me to teach them DJing, but really I need to teach you how to be totally manipulative & callous & maybe even free up the Narni a few times with influential people and then you will have a long career ahead of you LMFAO
and lastly have you noticed how few Female DJ's on Radio and in the public mainstay cant actually DJ and have never bothered to learn- they just put on a record, get some swarovski'd headphones and jump around in the booth a bit! C'mon, that a bit of an insult to every one's intelligence... Whereas Male DJ's are usually actual DJ's who then graduate on to presenting and other things. I think it would be lovely if Radio Stations and events would book more women on the strength of their actual technical skills, music & personality rather than whatever misguided way they are booking talent at the moment.
There are so many other lies and rubbish that I could Blog every day for the next 10yrs about them, but I think I will leave it at that for the moment....oh and don't even get me started on some of the 'DJ Agents' I have come across lol..
